have a 550 ran good started one day and the 550 pto quit is there something simple to look for

Yes, there is a roll pin that holds the 2 halves of the PTO shaft together. If you pop the inspection cover off the bottom in front of the transmission where you adjust the PTO, and take a look in there you should see all of the plates and over center assembly all neatly put together in the PTO basket. If the plates are hanging out the front of the basket and the over center assembly looks out of place, it probably broke the roll pin that holds the 2 shafts together. When that happens, it will usually spit the plates out the front of the PTO basket and beat them to pieces. If that's the case, you would have to pull the top cover over the transmission, and split the tractor to fix it correctly. However, it could have broken the PTO engagement fork, or the brass collar that goes on the over center clutch, and that would all cause the PTO to not engage as well. Good luck

Could be the set screw in the clutch too. That's what let mine slip apart.
