An old high hour tractor. The head from number one cylinder exhaust valve went down thru the piston and I found it between the bottom of number two piston and the top of the number two rod. Also found broken fly weight hinge pins from a governor failure from a long time ago firmly stuck in a 1/4" of sludge in the pan.

As long as there?s no major damage to the rods or castings those 283 gassers are cheap to overhaul. We did the bottom end in my 1600 a few years ago and put a 283 piston and sleeve kit in it. Think when it was all said and done we had about $1500 ish in it with bearings and other odds and ends as well. I can?t remember if we had to grind the crank or not though. But I gotta believe unless parts skyrocketed, with having the head machined and gone through you could have that motor done in the neighborhood of $2500.

Govonor failer is is what did my 1850 in, needs the crank reground or different one, plus the clutch is shot, rear main started leaking and a leak from the hydrapower somewhere! While farming I didn't have the pennies to fix it, now working full time plus farming when I get a chance I don't have time for it along with other projects I'd like to see done! Oh well, take some time to do them some time in life!

It needs a head, crank ground, flywheel machined, new clutch and bearings, sleeve and piston set, Block has chemical erosion where the sealing rings go, will have to be repaired, radiator needs to go into shop, Add to that filters, oil, points, condenser, plugs, gaskets, etc. I did a 1650 two years ago at nearly $5000.00 This one is worse. Finding a reliable used engine isn't easy and could be the same as this one. This tractor has good tires and gears and when done correctly it should give years of good service without worry.

That's one of those things that would be sitting out back until I found a rough one with a good engine on an auction.

High hour tractor, instead of sinking money into a motor rebuild probably buy a runner for a little more than a rebuild or maybe the same $$$ and keep yours for parts. For those that say if you rebuild you know what you have I agree a rebuilt motor in a worn out tractor(LOL) For example what is around I saw a 1850 diesel that looked off the farm but ran and operated OK,pretty good rubber sell for $3300 couple months ago.

I?m with Dieseltech on this one. Knowing all of that, call Maibach and see what a 4B cummins kit would cost. Last I knew he was working on one for the 16 series.

I'd be looking for another tractor. Even with a good engine everything else could go south quickly and at that point you're just chasing money.

For how long. This guy is a retired 78 year farmer. (not me) He feels this is where he wants to be.

Oliverkid, the Diesel is 283. The Gas (like this one) is 265. You are right about it being relatively inexpensive compared to others.

You'd be amazed how fast you can strip a parts tractor and use up a whale of a bunch of money's worth of stuff off it. I bought a 1600 a few years back for $600 for parts. I used the radiator, hydraulic pump, drawbar support, tires and some PTO parts all in the first year. I'm constantly digging through the parts that are on a skid in the corner of the toolshed looking for more stuff.
