Replacement Starter experiences

I find myself in need of a replacement starter of my Diesel 1600. It has a Delco-Remy 1113098 on it now. Starter rebuild shops are a dying breed in my area. I cant find one within 2 hours drive.

Delco was not much help. They thought a 28mt model may fit but couldn't say for certain. No gear reduction options from them either.

I see lots of good things about the Maple Valley Farms replacement gear reduction starter and watched the video showing it spinning a tractor 20% faster than stock.

I also see some on ebay that are about $100 more but promise 4:1 gear reduction ratio. It has a 1 year warranty also.

I wondered if anyone has used the 4:1 starter and had any experiences to share?[/url]

I put one on an Oliver 1655 diesel last spring, would definitely get another when the need arises. Friend at church has two, one on his 1655 diesel and one on a 1550 diesel. Both start faster than the Delco.

I'm running three of the starters off ebay right now on Olivers from DB Electrical for a little over $100.They are gear reduction starters, some say the Maple Springs starter is different,to me they look exactly the same.Don't
think Maple Springs has a starter factory out back.(LOL) The one I put on the 1550 gas required me to replace the original metal gas line with a flexible line to fit.At any rate they spin the motor better than the original starters.

These are the two I am looking at. The first one looks just like the Maple Springs Farms one and I assume it would be 1.2:1 gear reduction also.

The second looks much different. It claims to be 4:1 gear reduction.

The ebay seller checked my starter part #, 1113098, and says it will interchange. They responded within an hour. MSF has not responded to my inquiry after 2 days. Both have 1 year warranty.

Has anyone run the second model? Everyone seems happy with the first.

First model (looks like MSF)

I too have one of the $100ish starters on my 1655 diesel. Coupled with a good Group 31, I can't complain one bit.

I would get one from Maple Springs farm. At least they aren't made in china like the ebay ones. I've gotten three from them and very happy with them.

I don't know if they are made in China or not. The page for the starter does not say Made in the USA and it looks identical to the ebay starter. If it said "Made in the USA" it would be a no-brainer. If it is just "Assembled in the USA", might as well get the China one as it is likely the same.

No one seems to have had a need for the larger 4:1 starter at twice the price. The stock one worked for nearly 6 years so I am probably being too analytical in my choice.

I think the starter you are looking at is for a real high compression motor. As far as the Maple Springs starter not being the same as the $100 on ebay someone is going to have to really explain the difference for me to believe it.

Could be. The seller claims the model will spin the motor 4x as fast as the direct drive model and have 3x the torque. with a broken coolant heater and single digit to sub-zero temps on the way, I could use the cranking speed. However, I don't want to break teeth off the ring gear either. They claim a direct swap with the Delco-Remy starter I have.

I'm not a betting man, but I'd throw down a dollar that a starter off a 94+ Dodge/Ram with 5.9L Cummins fits most Olivers.

I have the old one off the tractor at the moment. I may run to Napa and see if it will match up. Theoretically, if the bolt pattern and clocking can be aligned, then its just adjusting the pinion depth to match clearance specified in the service book?

A warrantied part from a local store is preferable to ebay in my experience.
