hydraulic filter spring

My Oliver 1600 is missing the spring that goes in the hydraulic filter housing and presses against the filter. It looks as though it has been gone for decades.

I have been unsuccessful finding a replacement locally. Will any old spring work that fits in there? I dont see any function it has other than to hold the filter against the hydraulic unit.

My 1550 was the same way when I got it. I think it's the same filter and housing as the 1600 but different location. The old style filter was open at both ends and had a spring and cap. New filters are closed at one end and need only the spring. I found one in a drawer of spare parts but you can find spring assortments at most hardware. I don't remember the size and I'm away from home just now. Small enough to fit the recess in the housing and in the end of the filter. About 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 long and maybe .047 to .052 wire diameter. The force isn't critical as the filter is under system pressure on both sides.
