Hello out there, I know it must be a repeated subject, but I am trying to get to the bottom of my 1941 70 Row Crop Gearing. It has 4 speeds at the moment as I would like to go to some road runs I am looking to
see if it definitely will have a 5th and 6th gear but blocked off as it only does about 6mph at the moment, which is ok for Tractor days on fields but not on a road trying to keep up with others. Some articles
say that somewhere only fitted with a 4-speed box, others say that 5 and 6 are blanked off, if so where should I look to see if there is anything stopping it getting into the top two gears. I have had the
plate off where the gear lever goes down into, and seen the two rods that go forward through the casing into the next chamber, that is covered by the Drive belt pully engage lever and Power Lift lever but I
have not looked under that. Any help welcomed.
Regards
Richard

I can't give you a definite answer on that but, I bought a 4 speed 70 for parts and I saw that there was a collar on one of the shift rails that prevented it from moving rearward. I took it that the collar was blocking the rail so it wouldn't shift into another gear but, I didn't research it. I didn't need any parts from the trans.

Thanks to you both for the information, I guess mine is just a standard 4 speed, it will be staying like that :) I will have to find a Tractor run for geriatric tractors that don?t go faster than 6mph :)

Regards
Richard

I've got a 39 70 here on 40 inch tires that I've been thinking should have a new home. It's a 6 speed, but if memory serves me right, both high gears are the same so it has two fifth gears I believe. It's in mid Michigan.

Distant family had years ago a 37 that came out on steel with 4 speeds. when converted to rubber the 5th and 6th gears were added but dover plate never changed so if you dod not know where they were supposed to be you would not find them. Tractor was sold when owner died before any family got interested in collecting. Present owner will not sell back to family. So anybody that did not know would think it was a 4 speed still not knowing where the extra 2 gears were to use them. Knew tractor back when it was farmes with but untill just a few years ago when owners son-in-law told me about the tranny.
