The tractor runs very good no issues after it starts, When starting tractor it spins
over very good but will not start until you leave key go back to run position. Once it
goes to run position it pops right off. Does this sound like bad key switch? How would
you check it out? Don't want to just change parts until I know what problem is.
 
Check the wire from the second small terminal on the relay to the coil circuit. That's supposed to provide 12 volts to bypass the resistance wire to the coil for starting.
 
I had this same issue on a 1655, I traced it to the key switch not being hot to the coil during cranking, I just ran another wire from the switch hot to the coil, been that way for years.
