Oliver 1650 Hi speed???

I did not know that some Oliver 1650s had a different rear end that gave them a much higher road speed. I actually owned one with a gas motor. Just used it around the farm. I never drove it on the road until the day I sold it. That is when I noticed it had a really fast road gear. Reading a post on here back in the winter had some fellows tell me of the different rear end ratios.

With tractor rides getting more popular I have been thinking of finding a Diesel Oliver 1650 with the faster road gear. So my question is on how to tell if a tractor has the lower ratio or not???

I have an Oliver 1655 that my Uncle bought new. I have even though of changing the rear end in it. Would that be possible??? I would keep the other rear end so it could be switched back later. Just some random ideas floating around. LOL

My neighbor has a 1550 diesel with the high speed gears, bought it in Wisconsin. Vegetable farms preferred them to haul product direct to canneries from the field. Have been told the 1550-1555 utility models had those gears with the 28 inch rear wheels, swap on some 38s and you have a fast one. Mennonites where I live like Farmall 560s, they put in 400-450 rear ring and pinion gears in so 40 plus MPH is no problem pulling their construction trailers. Post the serial tag numbers of your tractor on the Oliver site, they will know what rear gears you have. A 1655 with over/under if I recall with stock gears would still have a top speed of 18-19 MPH. When I checked his 1550 with my 560D his was 22-22 1/2 MPH range.

I have a 1550 RC with the high speed transmission. The difference is in the transmission, not the rear end. 38 inch wheels and a PO put 16.9s on it so it sits high and really moves. If you want to go that fast be sure your toe-in is set right and the steering is tight. Oh yeah, brakes too. Uses the same case as the 1650 but the internals are different so that may not apply to yours.

My 1600 Utility with 28" tires will run about 20 MPH on the road, with 38" it'd move on out pretty good.Other extreme is my Cockshutt/Oliver 1650 Wheatland maybe will run a little
over 10 MPH in road gear.

High speed gears for a 1650 will have the last 3 number of the serial number 456 instead of 452. An over under unit will increase speed 20% over direct drive. What are the last 3 numbers of your serial number?

J. Schwiebert: Thank you for posting the transmission codes numbers. I currently do not have a Oliver 1650. I have a Oliver 1655. It appears to be more than a simple change so I am going to look for an Oliver 1650 with the correct high speed gears. I know where two of them are for sale. So I will have to check them out and see if them have the transmission codes I want.

Do you know if the high seed was early or late in the production??? Also I have heard that some of the very late Olive 50 series had the Over/under hydraul, Is this true??
