I have a 1968 1650D with an adjustable width wide front axle (Not the swept back axle). Previous owner set up the width of the front to line up with the back tires which has always been good for my purposes. The problem is that the stub ends that insert into the axle tube are loose despite the u bolts being tightened down. The hubs are free to swing a couple of inches in each direction. The width adjusting pins have wallowed out the holes in the outer axle tube. There is very little additional tightening of the u bolts that can be done as the slit in the outer tube is almost squeezed tight. Outside of replacing the entire stub axle/kingpin units is there another way to repair this? Maybe a thick piece of shim stock?
