1650D wide front problem

I have a 1968 1650D with an adjustable width wide front axle (Not the swept back axle). Previous owner set up the width of the front to line up with the back tires which has always been good for my purposes. The problem is that the stub ends that insert into the axle tube are loose despite the u bolts being tightened down. The hubs are free to swing a couple of inches in each direction. The width adjusting pins have wallowed out the holes in the outer axle tube. There is very little additional tightening of the u bolts that can be done as the slit in the outer tube is almost squeezed tight. Outside of replacing the entire stub axle/kingpin units is there another way to repair this? Maybe a thick piece of shim stock?

If you're sure you'll never want to adjust the axle width in the future, you could just weld it. When I bought my 1655 back in 2000, one stub axle was loose as you describe. Rather than go through all the hassle of replacing the front end, I welded it solid. In the fall and winter I mount a front end loader with fork lift on the tractor and carry logs with it. It's stood up for 19 years now with no problems. Just make sure that within the range of motion of the stub axle, you get the axle exactly where you want it before you weld.

Call these folks. Have Lois put you in touch with Glenn. They got 6 or several parts for them.

I bought a wide front out from under a 2-105 from the scrap yard and put it under my 1600. That one had large bolts in it instead of pins. My 2-105 has pins. I'm thinking somebody might have enlarged those holes a little in the one under the 1600 and put those bolts in to tighten it up. Either way,it's good and tight.

That's the way one of the previous owners of a 1655 parts tractor I have solved the problem all welded up tight. Most times they are about impossible to move in and out anyway.

That's for sure. I ran my 1600 with the clamps loose for 16 years with a loader on it and never could get it loosened up.

You bore the holes out put bigger grade 8 bolts in,take a 4" grinder cut the slot more so the clamps tighten the inner tube tight. My 1650 i had to cut almost 3/16" out of both slots on each end. Make sure the spindles are tilted about 1 inch freward of straight up and down to give proper caster angle before boring holes out

Thanks for that write up RWB. That is the right method for me, works but still allows for adjusting the width if I ever need to.
