White 2-85 transmission troubleshooting

Wondering if anyone can help me with my white 2-85 transmission trouble. After raking hay for an hour in 5th gear with no trouble, I tried to shift into 6th to head home and It Would not go in. So I put it back in 5th with no trouble and got back in that. Once I got home I shifted to R2 with no Trouble. Then put the tractor in Neutral and left off the clutch but it still was in the reverse gear. After a while I got it to go into 3rd but when I left off the clutch it wanted to stall, like it was stuck between two gears. I was able to get it back to neutral, but something is definitely wrong. Does any one have any ideas?

Yes I have some ideas. Did you check the transmission oil? Is there oil in the transmission filter? send me an e-mail with your phone number.

I was just having a conversation about this last night with my old man retired Oliver mechanic friend. He said the symptom you describe was usually caused by a collar seized on the shaft as a result of no pressurized oil flow, caused by low oil level. Easiest way to check for pressure is loosen the transmission filter while running.

We had a 2-85 on our farm several years back and if you tried cutting corners when shifting gears the lever would get out of the shift rails. If you shifted
it the correct way ?H? and didn?t try to cut the corners we never had any trouble. It was the only Oliver or White , and over the years, and there were several
that never caused any shifting problems. 60-66-super66, 70-77-88 1800-1600-1650-1755, 2-105, 1855, 4-150, all these never caused any problems

So I started the tractor up and loosened the transmission oil filter, instantly oil was pumping out everywhere. Seems like I have good flow and pressure at the filter.
Even with the good flow at the filter, could I still have lost oil pressure to the transmission internals and seized something up? I?m wondering now if I have a shifting fork problem?

I suspect that your 2-85 is one of the earlier models. We had a early model 2-85 that acted very similar to what you are describing. It locked in two gears constantly when we first bought it. We were very disgusted. The dealer came out and removed the gear shift and replaced it with another from an Oliver. His story was that there was a mis-fabrication of the gear shift(slightly short). We had no more problems using the Oliver gear shift.
I would advise to check the gear shift lower portion closely for wear which may cause it to jump out of the shifting rails leaving you in two gears at once.
