What is found when I opened the steering box:

Don?t be too sure about that!!!

What is it? (Doesn?t look anything like a bearing to me :)). Did you damage it while dismantling? :)

If you bought the tractor new, the repair may see you out.

Can water run down from the steering wheel and into the box - a ring, with a lip, might make it drip off before it gets to the seal?

Look on the bright side - at least you were able to steer it.

There's no race inside those bearings. They're just a cage with rollers. The shaft is tapered and acts as the inside race, then the outside goes in a cup like any bearing would. They can be a bugger to get shimmed right. I could write the text book on that now.

That cup is now concave!

When you get ready to put that together,Kent Gordon gave me some great tips. There's a shim kit for those that goes between the top and bottom piece of the gear box. Sparex has it. AGCO owns Sparex so they can get them, but they'll probably have to order it. There's another tip to holding the bearing on the bottom of the shaft too so you don't bend or crush it. Post back when you get ready to put it together.

I don't know if you need those numbers or not,but here they are. The Sparex number on the shim kit is 61623 and the AGCO bearing number is 180549M1.

Okay, I'm ready to listen, what's the best way to set adjustment on these?
