oliver 1555 distributor drive gear

Tractor is firing when the rotor is between the plug wire in the cap. I loosened the distributor and lined things up right 3 times and each time after turning tractor over the rotor is not in line with a plug wire- it's pretty much in between. Pulled the distributor off and looking down in it, it looks like that drive gear is worn. My question is (this is my first Oliver)- I have read the book but want to be positive- the gear I'm looking down at is also the gear that drives the oil pump, right? And according to the book all I have to do to get that gear out is remove the oil pump, right? thanks

If it's a gas model the slot in the top of the gear should be parallel with the crankshaft when #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke. The slot is slightly off center so the distributor only goes on in one position. Don't think the slot matters on a diesel.
