770 PTO shaft comes out

I have a 1960 770 row crop tractor and was operating a tiller. A couple of klunks and I noticed the PTO shaft had come out a ways and quit turning. Pushed it back in and felt it engage and it works fine as long as there is pressure to keep it pushed in. What keeps this shaft from coming out?

You mean the 540 shaft and not the long shaft from the engine. The 540 was held in place by a snap ring at the front of the shaft. Number one cause of that problem was the shaft and the shaft on the implement were not able to change lengths and or the shaft was not lubricated properly. Later Oliver had a kit that replace the snap ring. Confused? send me an e-mail. J.
