We have an Oliver 550 that we use for mowing, we have not used for pulling wagons or anything similar.

When going down hill, the engine will not hold the tractor from going faster. It almost feels like a hydraulic shift in low when you down a grade.

It pulls fine going forward in all gears, even when going up a grade.

Any suggestions where to start?

Thanks
Rich

I don't know how that would be possible and it still pull up a grade. It is all gear to gear with sliding collars to engage the gears. There are no roller or sprag clutches in the drive line. Only way it could coast is if it pops out of gear, but then it is not going to pull when the grade changes.

My 550 backhoe did that before. I thought all kind of bad was going on inside the transmission. It ended up being the key on the wheel hub was cracked/broke and only catching in forward direction. It acted just like a sprag clutch.
