Oliver 550 PTO

Bought my first Oliver a few weeks ago because it has half-tracks on it. On the right side is the 3pt control and another long lever that goes down towards the floor boards. I thought that long lever was the PTO selector. Problem is I can't get the PTO shaft to turn off. The selector lever seems simple enough, but what am I doing wrong? What might cause the PTO to not turn off? What should I be looking for?

purchase a service manual and follow the adjustment procedure.

if that doesn't work prepare your self to split the tractor.

Yes, that is the pto selector handle. You can remove the small inspection plate (4 - 7/16 bolts) from under the tractor to see how it works and to make adjustments with the detent button and adjustment ring. It should be dry in there. No gear oil etc.. Most of the time the pto fiber plates get warped, or gummed up and they stick. Very common on the 550. With the pto disengaged (handle pulled back) take a 2x4 and put pressure against the turning pto to see if it stops. I fixed mine and it's been working great for 10 years now. And yes, purchase the service manual. Doing a z-split on the tractor is not too bad. Have fun with the new tractor!
