Oliver 770 with and over and under will not allow me to use both upper and lower set of gears at the same time. I can have one or the other, not both.
Any suggestions?

Help me understand what you have. Do you have the power booster that lets you shift from direct drive to low without clutching,or just a six speed, two reverse with three forward and one reverse in each of two neutral ranges?

If you have the later, how are you getting it from one neutral to the other? Are you unbolting the shift, pulling it out and moving the forks with a big screwdriver or prybar?

Yes, I do have the power shift that doesn't work, but would that have an effect with not getting the 2 neutrals to work. Thanks for your input

No,the power booster wouldn't effect the two neutrals on the gear shift. The power booster is a separate unit bolted to the bell housing and has nothing to do with the transmission. What I'm not clear on is how you know both neutrals are working if you can't shift form one to the other.

I hate to get in to this stuff without knowing what somebody's experience with Oliver is. People new to them usually just don't know how to shift from one to the other. If you do know how it's supposed to shift, and it just won't,it sounds like the shift just isn't in the right notch in the forks.

I would also say shift fork rail or slide problem. With the lever on side (torque amplifier) you should see a 1/3reduction in speed in any gear (low range). It is not impossible in high range for the main transmission to be harder to shift. Shift torque into low and then shift. Also not impossible you could have a bent shaft or damaged gears.

I've shifted Olivers for 30 years and this one will be in either high range neutral or low range neutral depending on me taking the shifter out and putting it back in the transmission. When I have it in either top or bottom neutral all 4 gears will work, but there's no neutral position. Thank you for your help.

OK,good to hear. Like Jocco said, either something's not lined up when you put the shift in,or something's broke. I don't have any pictures of what it's supposed to look like when it is lined up. Wish I did.

I'll tell you this, the only one I ever broke a rail in was my 1550. On that one,the shift moved, but the transmission stayed in reverse. I took the shift out, moved the fork with a prybar, put the shift back in and went through the forward gears alright, but when I went to reverse,I was right back to square one. Other than that,I never had to get in to one.

I'm kinda wondering if it's like when that rail broke in mine. It was broke right beside the notch. When I'd move the shift one way it moved the fork OK,but when I moved it the other way,it moved the half that wasn't bolted to the fork. At least the 770 is easier to get in to. There's just the steel cover instead of the whole hydraulic and rockshaft assembly.

Same thing happened on my 1550. When I pulled it apart I found a home made shaft that had been broken and welded once before.
