1850 Tach Drive

Just thought I'd post this incase it can help somebody. The tach quit working on the 1850 Diesel while I was grinding feed during the polar vortex. I thought that drive pin broke. I got around to taking it apart yesterday and it wasn't broke. I pulled the 90 degree angle drive right out and stuck a screwdriver in the drive end. It didn't turn the driven shaft. I took a punch and drove the driven shaft that the cable hooks to,the gear and soft plug right out.

The gear was stripped off,but only along the inside half. I drove the little shaft out of the gear, turned it over and pressed it back on. I tapped the whole thing back in and it turned OK. I put the soft plug back in,but had just a slight catch in one place when I turned it the right way. It turned backwards smooth enough.

I went ahead and put everything back together and started it up. It worked. I ground two loads of feed with it and it must be running smooth, the needle sits right there steady as a rock with no jumping around.

Thanks for posting that. I've had to mess with that tach drive on my 1850 too, always wondered why they didn't use the exposed shaft on the other end of the accessory drive?

Mine was like that when i bought it, i thought about turning it around like that but the it stays young and pretty not gaining hours. Now if i could just get a broken tach put on my wife i would have it made! Lol

I spray with mine. I've got the sprayer calibrated to run in 5th gear at 1700. Without the tach,it'd just be precision guesswork.
