Super 55 diesel crankshaft seal

Another question for my Super 55 diesel rebuild. I am putting everything back together again and noticed that the area where the front crankshaft seal (cork) rubs the inside of the timing cover looks to be heavily worn or did it come from the factory machined with grooves like this? If it is worn I can machine it smooth or build it up flat with some JB weld. I am installing a new seal assembly.

New, it was smooth and as thick as
the rest of the cover. I usually
machine them smooth again and add
shims behind the seal to push it
out to take up the thickness of
the cover that has worn away so
that it has tension to seal well.
If the cover is worn thin you may
want to replace it. Above all,
soak the new seal in oil before
installing!!!

you can get an automotive type seal from korves or maiboch that goes outside the cover and behind the pulley works better than the old cork seal, BTDT.
