1550 RC transmission

Just curious, maybe someone can explain it to me. My 1550 row crop has the -502 high speed transmission and I'm not looking to change it. The high speed shifter has the low range in the forward position but the regular has it rearward. Looking at the parts diagram there is no difference in the gear callouts except for one pair that is listed as "low speed tractor". Nothing pertaining to the high speed option. I'm wondering if the difference is nothing more than flipping the range gears around. The high speeds are only on 5th and 6th. 1 thru 4 are actually a little slower, which I like. Can anyone enlighten me?

My grandpa had one..loved it. Seemed like all gears but 1st,2nd and 1st reverse were faster than all our other 1650s,1750s,ect. 4th gear was used everywhere from planting, raking, baleing, ect.

Can't tell you,but I think the utility had that pattern too doesn't it? When I got a set of decals form Lyle for mine, the shift pattern decal was backwards like that.

From the op manual. Mine is on the left. What got me thinking is there was a post a while back asking if a high speed could be converted. The parts book gives the number of teeth on the gears and I didn't see any different gearing listed.

Mike and others:
? Perhaps the operators manual is somewhat misleading. ? The 502 is the high speed 5th and 6th gears in a Row Crop, however is regular speed in a Utility because of the smaller rear tires. ? There are two gears that you need both on the differential drive shaft. ? I assume that you have access to a parts book or shop manual, in parts, gear #54 160 278 AS and gear #55 160 277 A. The illustration in the shop manual shows the High Speed.? Gear on the input shaft needs to be turned around, gears #31 & 37 on the countershaft need to trade places.
? Should you decide to do this hope you have a good shop. ? The engine & hydra-power need s to come out, Hydraulic removed, PTO removed, Axle carriers & wheels removed, Brakes and differential supports removed, Ring gear removed and transmission completely disassembly (leave reverse idler alone). ? Gears #54 & 55 are on the differential drive shaft and that is the start of assembly of the transmission. Been there done that.
