What is this on this 1850?

What is that red cylinder I see on the side of the engine with the water line going to it? I see them only on a very few of the 1850's.

Block heater
Used them on our old ih’s all the time years back

Tank type engine heater, most have a built in thermostat.

Was this something that came direct from the factory, or was an aftermarket add on? Was the benefit to having it, since the most Oliver 1850s I see don't have it?

IF you live in California, you likely would not ever need one. They were not fitted without good reason!

after market add on. has faster warm up time compered to the standard block heater. the water heats up and pushes hot out the top and the cold keeps entering from the bottom. they are used on any tractor or engine. not oliver specific.
