The original subject was "Re: Oliver 550 power steering cylinder".

In the above archived post its mentioned that the ford 4000 power Steering cylinders will fit on
an Oliver 550. Is it the early Ford "round hood"4000 or the later square hood 4000, or both that
the power steering cylinders will work on an Oliver 550.
I have a 2-44 Industrial Loader backhoe and sure need cylinders. it essentially is a 550 with a
heavier front axle I've been told.
I've been to 2 hydraulic shops and they say they cannot rebuild them due to the way they
internally supply oil to the opposite end of the cylinder from where the connections are.

Thanks.

I read a post a few years ago that said cylinders from a similar era Corvette would work. At the time I looked them up on Rock Auto and they were available and reasonable.

And while we're talking about 550 power steering, the power steering pump (that bolts to the back of the generator) is the same as the one on '57 Chevs, and maybe some others of that era. Cylinders may the the same.

I have a 1965 Oliver 550 Industrial model, I went through that same nightmare.

I cut the cylinders open at the end, my rams were bent, so I took those rams to a hydraulic machine shop, and they made me an exact copy of them. That cost me $125 for the pair. On the piston side of the rod, there's a plastic O-ring. Another hydraulic shop supplied me with new updated 2- piece O-rings, which were $20 each, I needed 2 total, 1 for each. I then put it all back together and had my friend tig weld the ends of the cylinders together.

All in all I have about $200 bucks in both of them. Most hydraulic shops I have found do not want to do all this work. Very expensive. But if you cut them apart and do all the prep work yourself it is possible. If you send me your rods, I can have that same machine shop make you some, and I'll get you those O- rings for the pistons.

I will update this thread with pictures. Stay tuned
