Super 88 injection pump .... need help !!!

Been a while since I visited this forum and I am posting this for a friend who needs an American Bosch injection pump from his Super 88 diesel. One of the shafts inside snapped off near the end that has a small drive gear attached. He says it would be doubtful to find the part and he would be looking for a used pump that someone might have or know about. Or if that part is available (not sure what it would be called or a part number), that would also work. If you can help, it would be much appreciated ..... I think there are some Oliver guys that hang out on the Tractor Talk forum that know a lot about these tractors and might be able to help. If you want to contact me directly, I will pass your info along to him. My email is [email protected] ..... Thanks.

A 77, 88, and 99 are all the same except max fuel setting, IF you can FIND a good one. Anytime a PSB sets awhile without use, there's a GOOD chance plunger will break first time engine is turned over..

Thanks for the reply DT ..... sounds like you would know that actual name of the part that broke, or maybe even the part number? Obviously, the pumps or the parts are not something easy to find right?

There has not been much parts support for the American Bosch PSB for years. Best to run them at least every two or three months, or the plunger is likely to stick and break first time engine is turned over. I'm semi-retired and still work on some older pumps, but don't even like seeing those come in anymore. Sometimes it takes three for parts to make one good pump. Gaskets and seals I can still get, but that's about it. Good hydraulic heads are hard to find.

That is testing the METERING SLEEVE, just because that is free DOES NOT mean the PLUNGER is free. I've seen pumps come in with loose metering sleeve and plunger was still broken. Any PSB that has not run in awhile I tell owners to remove the pump as is, where is meaning DO NOT EVEN SET THE TIMING! If I get the pump in without turning it there's a good chance I can save it after a good tear down and cleaning. Just my two cents of forty plus years of diesel injection repair..

How hard is it to convert the older engines to a RoosaMaster/Stanadyne pump? I have an 880 here with the Bosch pump and a newer 770 with the small rotary and just didn’t know what all was involved. Probably been covered on here before but just haven’t looked.

Some gear changes are needed, American Bosch PSB runs at engine speed, Stanadyne/Roosa pump turns 1/2 engine speed. Also injection lines, probably front gearcase.

Thanks J. And Dieseltech. That’s about what I figured, high pressure lines, pump, everything from the block forward so to speak. I just didn’t know if there was some magic involved or the blocks or crank were different. Good to know if the day comes when the 880 doesn’t go.

I bought a NOS PSB hydraulic head assembly about 8 years ago from a diesel shop that wasn?t sure what it was for. Checking the numbers showed it was for the latest 770/880 tractors.

Unless the head tag was missing, they should have identified what size plunger it had and what it was for by the tag number. Most late Oliver six cylinder heads used HD 3690AR.
