1650 diesel head

Having trouble finding a head for my 1650 diesel. I am getting combustion pressure into the coolant side. Took the head off and it is all pitted up with a hair line crack on one hole. Any help would be appreciated. Indirect injection style. casting number is
e221902h I am in central mn.

Its a very small crack from inside the recessed area for the valve towards the main combustion area. I can get a picture and try to post it later tonight.

The deep crack in the pitted area of the combustion area you can kind of see it weeping out. It was laying down as it would on the engine. I tipped it up and cleaned it off to get a better pic and stuff kept making its way out.

Any diesel head will look like that setting a long time without running too. I had an IH 460 diesel that sat in a barn seven years, it ran but missed bad on one cylinder. With head off the number one chamber had that same pitting, with exhaust valve and seat pitted severely also. With new exhaust seats, and one valve engine ran fine after hear repaired and installed. Injector tips will show that erosion too, have one bad tip on a Cockshutt 570 Hercules set of injectors in now for service. When the holes erode the spray pattern is horrible.

(quoted from post at 18:52:23 01/23/19) Pitting like that (to me) indicates water/coolant has been in the
combustion chamber while it was running.

Im certain water was getting in there. It started burning water. Started running hot and I filled it up while it was running. The water would actually bounce out of the radiator in time with the knocking, ticking, missing noise from the engine. The other five cylinders look fine. I hope its salvageable if I cant find another.

There is a place in Nevada IA called Midwest Cylinder Head that can fix anything cast iron. They got bought out by Arnold Motor Supply a few years ago so if you have an Arnold's near by they will deliver it from your local store to the shop in Nevada for you if you don't want to make the drive yourself.
I just fixed a 262 Allis Chalmers that is the same design. That crack from the surface to the injector hole won't bother anything. It's when they get close to the fire ring they become a problem. With all of that rust pitting, I'd definitely have it pressure tested to make sure it's not coming from somewhere else. Next thing is check your sleeve standout. You need about .004 proud of the deck to seal. If your sleeves have dropped, you will need to pull it down and have the counter bores re cut and the block decked to bring the sleeves back where they need to be.

I have already been in contact with midwest cylinder head. It will be heading down to them as soon as I figure out how to box it up and ship it. I was hoping to find another head a little cheaper but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. I’ve called everyone the internet brings up east of the rockies and can’t find this casting number. Thanks for reminding me about the sleeve protrusion though as I have not checked that yet.

I have the same cracked head (221 902) that has several sever cracks. I haven't been able to find the replacement either.

I bought the 1650 in November thinking as great as it ran and started I would just need a head gasket... I was wrong. I fell in love with the old girl and want her back.

At this point what would be my obstacles to doing an engine swap with the newer style 283D or a 310D. It appears the block casting numbers (221 620) are the same.

if I ever find a Lanova head I could put the original engine back in to keep the tractor matching the production card.

If you have a Facebook account try posting on oliver and white tractor page.

I don’t think it would be that hard. Some plumbing and wiring. The hard part is finding one, and for a decent price. I had thought of that too but decided to just fix it. The rest of the engine is in good shape so I decided to take a chance. If this happens again it’s getting a cummins. The head is with midwest cylinder now. I will post pics when I get it back in case someone might find it useful.

Got the head back. Looks like new. Price was even a little
less than their quote. Picture is of the offending cylinder.
There?s a little grease smudge above the right valve in the
picture it?s not in the steel.

That is looking excellent!

I think the "smudge" looks like leftover writing with a marker. Maybe the machinist wrote down a measurement or something.
