880 fuel gauge

The fuel gauge on my 880 won't work, if I touch the wire to the battery it goes to full so I think the gauge is good. The tractor is negative ground. I'm thinking I need a better ground. Am I on the right track? Thanks in advance, Chuck

Most gauges should read full with the sending unit wire grounded. Another way to test, remove the sending unit from the tank, with the sending wire on and a jumper wire on the base ground other end to tractor. Now move the float arm from full to empty and see if the gauge responds the same. If it works OK then make sure the float is not full of fuel too. Sending units do go bad over time though.
