Oliver 66 pto

The pto on the new to me 66 isn't engaging
when I move the handle forward. I feel it
lock like the clutch engages but no PTO.
Where should I start? Manuals are on the
way but will be late this week before I get
them. Thanks in advance

Take the cover off. If you can't see anything obvious, take the three bolts out behind the clutch pack and pull the shaft.
This is a 1550,but the 66 will be pretty much the same.

Do what olliejunkie said, with engine off, engage PTO, put the pointed end of a heelbar or something through the hole in the output shaft and try turning.   If you can turn something is unhooked. You probably can't turn it by hand.

Pulled the cover tonight, turning pto makes clutch turn, including the main drive shaft but that central shaft doesn't turn when tractor is running.? I'm assuming that means that shaft is broken.? Any thoughts?

Could be. Time to remove the 3 bolts and look at it. There is a hub on the back of the flywheel as well. You will have to pull the shaft back regardless. Then you will probably have to move the shaft coupling and pull the bell housing.

(quoted from post at 04:09:27 01/16/19) Lift works, forgot to mention that.
I'm pretty sure your pto runs the lift but have never had one apart. If its broke it would be behind the lift. I would also think they would normally break in front of it as the shaft is a smaller diameter. I'm going to have to think on it.

Survey says...broke pto shaft. PN 1LA1571. Anyone know of a source?

1LA1571 is the part number I believe. They're available from multiple sources, this site included.
I bought a used one on Ebay. You may be able to get the rest out through the rear end cover if you're lucky. Hopefully you wont have to take the bell housing off. Mine snapped off at the very front.

Try Smitty's in Dalton Ohio. He can get a new one through A&I,but more than likely,he'll have a good used one. 330 832 9792

(quoted from post at 19:01:50 01/16/19) Do you have a photo of what engine side of
that shaft looks like?
Yea. After looking at your pic closer it appears it is broke pretty far up. I will try to get a pic tomorrow. There may be room to work it back where the coupling is. I cant remember how much space there is. I think you will have to get it back before the bell housing can be removed anyway.

Thanks. I'm still trying to figure out how
that shaft is driven. A pictures worth a
thousand words and I can't find any good
oics.

It is the same approx the same diameter to the front and has splines on it that slide in a hub on the back of flywheel.

If you're not aware the trans input shaft and output shaft coming out of the bell housing is hollow. The pto shaft goes clear from the back of the tractor through the hollow shafts to the back of the flywheel. You will want to take the three bolts out of the trans coupler. 2 in front and one in back. Slide the coupler forward towards the bell housing and see if there is room between the the engine output shaft and trans input shaft to work the pto shaft back. Maybe you can get in through the lift assembly and work it back. I'm not familiar with them. The pics of my shaft are from a 66. Others may be different length. Clear as mud?

Makes sense now. Mine looks to be broken
at about the mid way point, just above the
midshaft splines. Guess I'll find one and
get it on the way while I finish rebuilding
my 8n's engine to make room to get the
Oliver in the shop.

Well the last guy I tried to explain it to never got it I dont think so you're half way there. They're pretty easy to work on. Lots of room between trans and engine on a 66.

Brian where are you located. I have the 66 PTO shaft you are looking for. Might be a pain in the neck to ship though. Send me an email if you want. Or text or call me 920-570-123two
