550 fuel guage

The cluster guage was smashed on the 550 when I got it, I bought a used one to replace it with and finally got around to replacing it. I'm not sure if I got the wires switched or not. When you turn on the key, the needle will move up to the empty mark. I added about 1/4 tank of gas and the needle didn't move any. I'm trying to decide if the sending unit is shot or if I just got the wires on the guage backwards. I haven't found a wiring diagram in the I&T shop manual and the reprint operators manual that I bought has one but the picture quality is so poor that I can't make out much except there are 2 wires going to the fuel guage. If I hooked up the wires to the guage backwards would it make any difference? Thanks, Chris

Chris: The black wire going to the fuel gauge comes from the Ignition switch. The other wire goes to the sender. If nothing else unhook the wire going to the sender and put a little jumper wire on that terminal and ground the other end. The gauge should read full. I have also read on here some of these replacement gauges on the market are set up for negative ground and it takes a different gauge for positive and negative ground tractors. No experience on that. More questions send me a reply. J.

Depending on where it came from or how the previous owner wired your tractor it could be wrong polarity
some bonehead re wired one of my 550's to Negitive ground and the others are as factory made them positive ground
