Super 55 PTO clutch

I'm at wits end again. What is this supposed to look like in there? I can't get the lever to go over center. I have the adjusting ring tightened up to where the discs and plates are just starting to drag. I put the whole entire tractor back together, every last bolt, started it up and drove it ahead to where the natural light was better then crawled under it to adjust it that way and everything had slid so far ahead that three of the fiber discs had come out the front of the spider.

When I took it apart,I had a pin out of each of those chain link things that attach the throw out bearing to the floating plate. Did I get those back in wrong? I don't see how the geometry would be right if they were flipped so that throw out bearing sleeve was back farther. Shouldn't those three fingers come back against the adjusting ring? The only way I can get them back there is to loosen the ring up so far that there's no way the clutch plates will even drag, much less engage right. Even then nothing locks and goes over center.

I have the washers back in the grooves in the shaft for the fork where they belong,so that's not the issue. I don't know where to go from here. I didn't have any parts left over when I got it together. I know one thing,it came apart easier the second time than it did the first.

A little more. The serial number is 48230. Is it possible that it was a six plate clutch? When I took it apart, all the fiber discs were decimated except one. The rest were just little fragments laying in the bottom of the frame. They weren't even in the spider, just the one way in back was intact. There were only four steel plated though. I can't imagine that one of those completely disappeared. The clutch worked when I got the tractor. I was brush hogging with it a few years ago and the clutch went out.

The clutch plate should never allow the discs to come out of the basket, if the discs did come out of the basket, there is a good chance that one of the fiber discs is now broken. I would think about the set screws that hold the clutch hub or the pin that goes through the PTO shaft coupler, if either of these are wrong it allows the basket to slide forward when the handle is engaged.

It took all the cogs off the second disc in. I'll have to get another new one. I just noticed something in the parts book that I didn't see before, that number 60 set screw. Do you have a parts book there to know what that 60A and 60B are? They say 60A-Set Screw, clutch hub dog point (special half) and 60B-Lock Screw, clutch hub set screw hollow. ?? The serial numbers for all three of those parts says 6000-.

When I took it apart the first time, everything just slid right out with no resistance. I wonder if I have something missing? At least that set screw I'd say,but I wonder about that 60A and 60B too?

The set screws do not show up in the parts book, they stack on top of each through a threaded hole in the hub, they are easy to miss and if they are not in there the clutch comes apart.

I have started using a single dog point set screw and Loctite it in place.

OK,I don't know if it shows it online or not,I've got an old original paper parts book. When I pulled it apart the second time, all 5 discs were out. If I tighten that set screw, will that help me adjust it so it goes over center alright?

If you search this site there are 4 or 5 discussions on the set screws and how to replace them. But I haven't found an illustration of picture.

Short answer is yes, it keeps the hub on the end of the shaft.

BTW, I have seen the setscrews causing this problem, but the one that took a while to figure out was a sheared pin in the collar that is inside the transmission, it allows the shaft to move forward causing the same type of failure.

I think it was RBoots who said just a week or so ago that he's got a 550 split that did that, now that you mention it. This one doesn't seem to have any movement in it to speak of. I had the flange off and changed the seal and o-ring. It wouldn't pull out when I had that off.

Thanks for the link. I'll get back in to it later today of I can work up the stomach to even look at it again. lol

I got it. You saved my bacon again. I took it apart, found the set screw and found the groove in the shaft where it needed to be. I put that one left over disc in it and put it together to see if I could get it to go over center. It's a pretty narrow window where the adjusting collar has to be,but I got it to where I could snap it in,put a wrench on the PTO shaft and couldn't turn the drive shaft from the front with a wrench.

I'll have to get another new disc. I want to find another set screw to put in on top of that one to lock it in. I thought I could find one in a bearing collar, but the first two I tried didn't fit. It's Sunday, let it sit. Problem solved.

Thanks again.

Good deal, the last one I did a couple of threads were broke out of the threaded hole, not leaving enough thread engagement for the second setscrew, therefore I used a longer dogpoint screw and Loctited it in place.

Yep, that was me. Unfortunately mine was under load when that pin sheared and wiped out the fiber discs... oh well. Got pin fixed and top cover back on, now waiting for clutch parts to go back together currently. Glad you got yours figured out
