Oliver Perkins Models and Over Under Question

Which models did the Oliver and White tractors have a Perkins engine in them? Were these Perkins engines good, reliable, easily rebuild-able and parts still available?

The over under transmission used in these Olivers and White tractors. I gather it is essentially like an IH TA, except 3 speed? Can you shift on the go, under load like a TA? Is the over under a trouble free, high hour unit? I realize a TA can last a LONG time, but none the less, TA's and their issues are a constant topic on IH forums. How does the Oliver/White over under compare? Parts still available?

The only ones with a Perkins were the Oliver 1850,White 2-85,2-88,2-105 and 2-110. Very reliable engine. Parts are readily available,but with all of those engines that are sitting in bone yards with low hours in combines,you have to think twice about even overhauling one.

As far as the Hydrapower (2 speed) and Over/Under (3 speed) reliability,they're way better than the Torque Amplifier. They're shift on the go with no clutching,yes. They free wheel in underdrive like the TA. I've got over 9700 hours on the HP in my 1550 and it's never been touched. The OU in my 2-135 had over 11,000 hours when I had that one rebuilt. I have just over 5000 hours on my 2-105. I took that one in to the dealer and had it resealed last summer. Mechanically there wasn't anything wrong with it,but it was dripping quite bad. Deere had a two speed unit like that in their Quad Range transmission. I had a 4040 that I bought new. I had to have that unit replaced at just over 10,000 hours. Trouble with those and the TA is that the tractor has to be split to replace them. The Olivers and Whites don't. You just lift them out of the frame with the engine.


The big thing that makes these better than a TA is the Sprague clutch. With the TA,when you pull it back in to low,the clutches are spinning against each other if it isn't under a heavy load. The HP and OU don't do that.
