This is gonna sound crazy

A buddy of mine just called me. Said he found a tractor he is interested in. Tractor is from what I'm told in West Point, Indiana. That's about an 8 1/2 hour drive from Western New York. Tractor is an 1855 with cab. He called looking for parts and the guy said he would sell the whole unit. From what I was told it has cab but maybe not doors, good front tires, rear tires good but not matching, fenders go with it if you want to take the cab off. Here is where it gets interesting. Head is off the engine. Supposedly had head gasket issues. Head was sent out and fully reconditioned. I was told resurfaced(milled I guess) and had a valve job. Head was never put back on. Tractor also has an oil cooler, but have no idea if the rod bolts and rod bushings were updated. He asked me what I thought it was worth and I said I wouldnt give more than 2000. Have no idea how the rest of the drivetrain is without it running. Have no idea if it has weights or not. I have not seen any pictures. Am I in the ballpark on price ? Around here one that is field ready is 5- 6 thousand maybe a little more or less depending on the overall condition.

I think you started high. I'd be hard pressed to offer anything over scrap that's 8.5 hours away, engine apart, and remaining internal condition unknown. Time, travel, fuel, and the unknown should all get factored into the $$ equation. Weighing all that vs. a field ready tractor doesn't seem like much of an advantage, especially if he was just looking for parts in the first place.

It's not for me. My buddy is doing the wheeling and dealing.
Guy he talked to said 2000 like I did. Coincidence. Me
personally think the whole thing is crazy. Drive all that way
to look at something sight unseen, and not running on top of
it.

I understand. I'd be hard pressed to give $2k for that tractor if it was next door. I'd really have to be in love with it.

I'd stick with the parts, have them shipped and be done with it. It's not the only 1855 around, bound to be something closer.

I appreciate the offer. I haven't talked to my buddy since he told me about it. I know nothing about the tractor or seller other than what I was told. I will see my friend tomorrow and ask if he is truly serious about it ! Thank you !
