Ok,this goes with the post below. I don't dare drive those wedges any farther, they're going too hard,I'm afraid of breaking the ears off the castings. It's out there 3/4 of an inch. What the H E double hockey sticks is holding it from coming apart?

The whole purpose of internet forums is to make a person feel stupid ain't it? LOL

It hasn't been two months since somebody asked on here about splitting one and I told them not to forget to unhook those arms, then I walk right out there and forget it myself. I wondered why the tires were toeing out so far when I drove those wedges in. Thanks for slapping me in the forehead so I didn't have to do it myself. Bet I won't do that again. LOL

While your that deep, it's a real good idea to replace the seal behind the clutch spider if you haven't already

Ya,I need to rig up a spanner wrench to get the nut off. I'll be calling you or sending you an email Kent. Somebody has turned down the steering shaft so it has a regular automotive bearing on one end instead of that special bearing and it's hanging up bad when I try to turn one way. It's a later 57 model. There's a couple of heat shields missing too. The one over the manifold and the one in front of the battery.

Randy---My email's open--If you email me, I'll send pictures of the spanner wrench I made---Thanks

I welded some 1/4” keystock on the edge of a pipe, capped the other end, and welded a 3/4” nut in the center of the cap. The keystock kept breaking off but I got the nut off. Once I had the nut off, I found a piece of pipe that the nut would just go inside of and then welded the keystock vertically on the inside of the pipe and three pieces horizontally as a stop to keep the nut from going into the pipe too far. It worked well.

Looks like my 550 right now as well. I'm gonna get rid of it soon, but had to fix the PTO after it quit working quite a few years back. Got it apart, the pin holding the PTO shafts together at the back inside the rear end housing had broken and when I tried to snap the PTO in, it let the guts of the PTO come out of the clutch basket when the shaft slid ahead. Looks like it bent a couple of the PTO clutch pieces and took the teeth off all the fiber disks. Oh well, at least it will be fixed before it's gone. I don't like to sell stuff that has a bunch of stuff wrong with it.
