Super 55 Z split

I'm trying to do a Z split on the Super 55 to put a PTO clutch in it. I had it split four or five years ago and put a main clutch and pressure plate in it,but I split it at the bell housing that time. I had the steering box out of it putting bearings in it,so a regular split was just as easy.

Anyway, the point is,the shafts have been slid apart fairly recently. All the bolts are out,I got it out a half inch or so with tire irons. I drove wedges in and had it three quarters of an inch or more. I was hitting one wedge with a fairly good sized hammer,it slipped out and the whole thing slammed right back together right quick. I even took the linkage rod off the PTO lever incase somehow the fork needed to tip,but it's still no go.

Any ideas? If it was stuck right solid,I'd be looking for any bolts I might have missed.

There is a little cover underneath held on by 4 (I think) quarter inch cap screws. Did you take 2 of those out? Randy: I have not split one in close to 45 years!

I have mine split right now. I think John is right. One way of knowing for sure is, take the bearing retainer cover off the back of the tractor and pull the shaft out that way. If it doesn't slide out, you still have the clutch pack set screws holding things. There are two screws so make sure you have both.

I didn't,but that's bolted entirely to the back half. From what I can see,the lower half should come apart the same whether it's a Z split or a bell housing split. I've tried raising the back half, lowering it,letting all the lift off the front half so the top casting is just sliding clean on the lower casting,it just won't go any farther. I pulled the coil wire, put it in reverse and bumped the starter, took it out of gear and tried again, then put it in a forward gear, bumped the starter, put it in neutral, still won't go any farther. It acts just like the splines aren't sliding all the way out. I drove the wedges between the frame rails and bell housing where those big bolts go and angled them down so they weren't going in behind the flywheel.

I'll take that plate off in the morning and try again. If it doesn't come apart on its own pretty soon,I'll take the hood off, unhook the wiring and do a regular split before I'll risk breaking something.

So I have to take that cover off and take the set screws out of the clutch pack then? Why won't the PTO drive shaft just slide out of the splines at the flywheel like they do in a regular bell housing split? I know they're different than all the Olivers and the PTO drive shaft is hollow and the tractor drive shaft is on the inside instead of the outside, but it's escaping me why it's not just sliding out and leaving the shaft and clutch pack with the rear half.

I've got a paper copy of the parts book. I see now the little cover that you're talking about. It's the one that has to come off to get the back pan bolts out,but that cover is missing off mine anyway. It shows another dust cover that, from the direction of the bolts in the schematic, bolts to the back half to cover the bottom of the flywheel, but I went back out and checked and I can't see that in there either. I'll double check again tomorrow, but if it has to come off,it should have had to come off when I split it last time too.

That's what I thought. The splines should just slide out of the rear half of the pressure plate. Since the clutch plates have started breaking up and falling out,it won't do me any good to engage the PTO clutch and turn the shaft with a pipe wrench either.

You can always hammer the little sheet metal cover straight once you take it off. Dont ask me how I know.

Randy--If you have 3/4 of an inch gap in it, you don't have any bolts that you missed other the flywheel cover---I'm surprised that getting it that far apart that it didn't tear the bolt holes out of the cover--I've had that happen numerous times when I've forgotten to take them out when tearing down a tractor--There's definitely no reason to remove the pto shaft as all that stays with the rear of the tractor when splitting it---HTH---Kent Gordon

No--The front part of the cover is in front of the flywheel---I think it's just the two bolts that are bolted to the bottom part of the bell housing are keeping it from coming apart

Don't know yet. I was brush hogging with it a few years ago,the PTO stopped,I took the inspection cover off and there were pieces of the fiber disc laying on it.

I got ahead of myself when I mentioned taking the clutch pack set screws off. Do you have any oil leaking out the rear of the tractor at the PTO shaft? If you do I recommend changing that O-ring in the PTO hub.
