I am painting an old plow loaned to me for
our plow days. It is a 3 furrow hydraulic
lift trail plow with both Cockshutt and
Oliver decals on it. It appears to have
been painted green over the red with white
rims. What is the right colour? Plow is on
its side in the pictures for repair and
paint. Thanks. Ben

Tough to tell from the pics. If someone put a gun to my head I would say it was originally red. Are you sure the red isn't a primer? What color does the owner want it, or are you doing it as a surprise for the owner? Also, where are you located? I'd say the closer you are to Canada, the better chances the plow was red...

I live in Canada, plow looks like it was red then painted green at some time. The
owner will be happy to see it cleaned up a bit, as long as I don't use some
leftover JD green...

Well as you're in Canada I'm going to bet it was Cockshutt red. I would do that if i was in your shoes.

As far as I can tell from those pictures it appears to be a 4340 plow which would have been assembled in South Bend Indiana. If it had been a 4240 the land wheel would have been in line with the third bottom. I don't know enough about South Bend production to know it it was red first for units shipped to Canada, or if they all got painted green, and then repainted red for units destined for Canada.

There was a three bottom mounted plow that made the rounds of the consignment sales and jockey lots here for a while. It was green with Cockshutt decals.
