1850 axle bearing

Hi guys I?m starting to dig into my 1850 diesel now that it?s winter. I took the left wheel off to replace the axle seal. I found steel shavings on the seal and axle. I can see one roller on the bearing that looks bad and the bearing seems rough when spinning the axle slowly. I have a book on the tractor. If I understand this right. I take the snap ring off the bull gear , then unbolt the housing and slide the whole axle and housing out of the tractor. How hard do the bearings come off the shaft. I appreciate any do?s and don?t?s of doing this. I probably should check the right side too. Thanks in advance for your advice.

One more question. The book says to remove the hydraulic unit to do this. Can?t I do it from the back once the pto unit is off? I?ve never had a hydraulic unit off of one of these. Thanks again for your advice.

I used to take the top off. Also if I remember the early and late tractors use different size bearings too. We also reversed the bull gears on some of those tractors depending on the wear pattern of the gears.

I can start the tractor. I haven?t torn into it yet. I sent you an email. I appreciate the help when you get time. It?s a winter project so it doesn?t have to run to feed cows in a hurry.
