I posted up in Tractor Talk but the post dropped off real quick to page 2 or 3. Just got this 77 from a friend who is moving. He put a 12 volt battery in it and tried to start it. In will spin over but he never got it started. Says there is juice going into distributor but points ain't sparking. I can figure that part out. 12 volt / 6 volt has me puzzled. It has a 6 volt generator and starter. What do I need to do before I start the tractor? Will the 6 volt generator charge the battery? Will it hurt anything to start and run the tractor? Also should the 12 volt battery be positive ground? If it is not like that now would the few times it was spun over hurt anything? Does the generator need to be polarized? Thanks

I bought the tractor from a friend who is moving. He bought it a couple months ago when I bought my MM. The guy he got it from said starter has tape around it to keep dirt daubers out. It had been rebuilt. It spins fine.

6 volt generator will not produce 12 volts, you can start it with a twelve volt battery.
just disconnect the generator for the time being.

A starter doesn't really care with it is grounded positive or negative, its going to spin either way. Grounds are established for the sake of the charging system. generally positive for 6 volt and negative for 12 volt.

Can you tell me which wire on generator I need to take loose? Thanks. I really want to get this tractor running so my buddy Dave and his wife can drive it around before they move. They sold the farm in Alabama and are moving to Idaho.

I suspect that there is two wires routed from the dash one should be larger then the other , the larger one would be the power wire. and it really doesn't matter what wire is the power wire just disconnect all the wires that are routed back to the dash so that there is no 12 volt power routed to the generator.

once you have started it and you have worked out any issues with the tractor you can then concentrate on properly wiring the gen/reg, I personally keep all my tractors equipped with generators that were originally equipped with such as installing an alternator can be come complicated, others may disagree. alternators are pretty much trouble free, the one thing to remember with a gen/reg system is that it requires really good grounding.

Check the plastic bushing in the side of the distributor that the pass through bolt goes through. Over zealous tightening can crack it and juice will short to the housing.

Simply hook up the 12 volt battery + ground and turn on the ignition. with the cap and rotor and dust cover off. Carefully open and close the points by hand. When you do that you should both se and hear a spark at the points. No spark means points are bad and need to be cleaned or replaced. Starting it with a 12 volt battery will not hurt a thing and as for the generator well the V.R. will see an over charged battery and so will not charge it but for getting it running it will be just fine with 12 volts as long as yo do not run it very long or the points and coil can be hurt. I would also put the coil on right side up instead of up side down like it is now because there is oil in a oil and could leak out sitting that way
