White 598 Plow

Hi, I?m looking for advice, on a White 598 Plow, that I?m thinking of going to have a look at. I was told, that this plow is a Manual Vari Width, from 12? to 20?. I was wondering, what kind of job this plow will do, in Sod, and Corn Stalks, if it was all set up right, from 14? to 18? wide. Thanks in advance. Bruce.

According to my piece of literature they were 14" to 22" cutting width, and adjusted via a hydraulic cylinder. Clearance from backbone to point 32-1/2". We only had one out, and I don't remember now if it had the 16"-18" bottoms, or the 18HD"-20" bottoms.

the 598 was a really heavy high clearance plow. I had one for years before I got a dmi ripper, pulled the 4 bottoms with white 2-135 fwd, mostly used 16-20 inches

My dad pulled a 6 bottom 598 plow with a earlier injection pump. The tractor dineod at 140 HP. I watched him one day, and said you are pulling the rear end out of that tractor. Sure enough, he started to hear a noise in the rear end. He soon traded for 2-135 and with the pump turned up it was all that tractor wanted in heavy ground.

I had a 5 bottom 598 plow that was hyd shifted. it did a decent job, especially after I put a buster bar on it. first pulled it with a 1086, but couldn't open it past 16". then I got a 3588 2+2, and that one had enough hp and traction to open it to 20-21". sold it to get a IH 720 on land plow. wish I had kept the White.

Depending on your ground, a 105 should pull 5 bottoms at 16" in most conditions without a problem. Heavy ground would keep you down in 2nd gear maybe or going down to 14" cut, or both? In our soil a 105 would easily pull 5x18.
