Whats the difference between Hyrda-Power and Over & Und

I see some Olivers have the side lever next to the throttle with over and under transmission, while others have the pull button under the dash with hdyra-power. What is the difference, and which is better and more reliable?

Hydra Power is a two speed with underdrive and direct. Over/Under is a three speed with under, direct and overdrive. No real difference in reliability but the Over/Under gives a faster road speed along with the convenience of three speeds in every gear without clutching instead of two. The three speed is superior when it comes to working them for sure in my opinion. They both freewheel in under.

Once you run a tractor with it and it free wheels. You will get it and you will understand how it works. I honestly didn't get it and how it exactly worked till the first time either. Then you will be ready and anticipate it.
Once you actually rebuild a unit for yourself you will really understand how it works and how simple it actually is.

Both have a sprag clutch (like the over running clutch for a PTO), such that if the input is trying to turn the output the rollers grab and it drives, if the output tries to turn the input they just tip and it free wheels.

NEVER start down a hill in under drive. It's like coasting in neutral. With just a tractor you can get it under control with the brakes fairly easily. With a loaded wagon or two, it can turn ugly in a hurry...

Oh yes it can :D

Bought mine about 20+ years ago. Hauled it in.

Went to a neighbor who had a built up berm for unloading flatbeds. Wasn't quite a match, but it was close.

Got on the tractor, fired it up, and put it in reverse (lo reverse on tranny), hydro power in lo. She zipped down that berm like she was riding on ice

In a split second, I had the presence of mind to stay off the brakes. I was backing down the hill.

Steered it safely down, then proceeded to light up a cig, and catch my breath, and let my heart slow down. Looking back on it, it was funny...…..wasn't at the time though
