I recently purchased a 28-44 ' have it in my shop now to bring it back to life; it has good spark; my question is - when sitting in the seat- on the right hand side are 2 levers; one is throttle and one is mag? However- both do work but the mag lever doesnt kill the spark no matter where I position the lever? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Don?t know, but the lever will be for adjusting the timing while running, and perhaps not as a kill switch. There may be a switch fitted for that, or if it should have a shorting position, something has gone open circuit inside the mag.

Ok...was hoping someone else had one like this; I know the rod is for timing- but somehow it has to kill...Thanks.

On the later flange mounted mags (oliver 90) there is an extrenal connection from the low tension side of the coil circuit which is shorted to earth by use of a switch at the driving station.

The earlier base mounted mags on the 28-44 will have a similar external connection like that ( but obviously not a screwthread connection for a wire), if the spark is killed by contact with the advance/retard lever at the fully retarded end of the travel. The lever will be the switching contact, that is all. If the short is made inside the mag, it will be obvious. These ignition systems were simple in that respect.

ok- I will check some more today; 1937 28-44; the last owner had hand painter "Oliver 90" on the hood but the ID tag says differently. Thanks.
