Tappets on 550 (2-44LL)

I am trying to check the tappets on my 2-44LL and I see by the book that the intake valve tappet gap is 0.010 while the exhaust valve tappet is 0.016 inch.
My problem is that I'm not sure which tappets are intake and which are exhaust. In the picture attached, could someone please list which labels are exhaust valve tappets? Label A is nearest the radiator.

Another thing, I'm having difficulty in bumping the starter to the exact spot to have both exhaust and intake valves are closed. Is there another way to get the perfect tappet positions to do the measurements?
Thanks

I set them as one valve is opening 1/2 way
to 1/2 way closed, i set the other valve on
that cyl. Im thinknig that from the front
it should be, exh. Int int exh exh. Int.
Int. Exh.

The exhaust valves have the rotators. As Kevin said the valve arrangement is E - I - -I - E - E - I - I - E. Take the spark plugs out and you can turn it with the fan belt once you bump it with the starter. More questions send me an e-mail. J.

Look at the positions of the manifold inlets and outlets.

Use the ?nine? method of setting valve clearance on 4 cylinder engines.

Inlets always open as exhausts close. Exhausts open only after the compression stroke.

Nearly all engines have exhaust valves at the end positions. Often inlets are grouped in pairs.

But the other posts have indicated which are which, without really learning anything. Enough to get the job done.

No1 is historically at the timing end of the engine.

Hope that gives you a bit of an insight to how things are arranged and how to recognise them if the exhausts didn?t have rotators.
