1650 diesel oil pump pressure relief valve

I want to check the oil pump pressure relief on my pump while I have the pump out. The manual calls for it to be set at 42 PSI. I figured that I would connect 42 psi air pressure to the pump body, and adjust the screw until the relief starts dumping. Has anybody done this? Any other advice on setting the pump relief valve?

Let me ask you this: What oil pressure do you have when the engine is cold? When say it has been at operating temperature say for 2-3 hours? Have you had the pump apart and measured the clearance. Are you coating the pump internally with oil are how are you sealing the pump?

I would rig of a leak detector and see where you are loosing the pressure. If you are close to 40 pounds cold a new spring is not going to help you much. I need to do some digging, but the oil pumps on the turbocharged engines used a different spring and that oo4 clearance I think is on the high side.How about a phone number? I am replacing the main and rod bearings due to the previous owner operating the tractor with the lift pump leaking diesel into the crankcase. I had an oil analysis done which indicated excessive diesel fuel and bearing material in the oil. After replacing the lift pump, the oil stayed clean, but the pressure was too low. Oil pressure would initially be at about 40 psi in cold weather, but would decrease to only 5-7 psi at 1500 rpm with the engine hot. The relief spring in the pump measures shorter than the spec, I am trying to find a new one. I already replaced the main oil pressure relief spring on the front of the block. The gears in the pump have only .004 clearance to the body.
