Oil Recommendations ?

Just a question that has probably been hashed around from time to time. What are some thoughts on older tractors, 60, 70, 66, 77, 88 for oil? Right now I am using a 30 wt. Synthetic blend in these units. Should I maybe be using 15-40 Synthetic or some other multi-weight? In my case the tractors really don't get worked hard but are used all day long for tractor rides, in this past summer some very hot weather. Ideas, opinions? Am I going to have problems changing weights with oil consumption? :)

Not really a problem with straight weight, wondered whether there is detergent in 30 wt? And it (30 wt.) is seemingly somewhat harder to find than the multigrades. As said have changed to synthetic blend with no oil consumption problems and good oil pressure even when very hot.

i run shell rotella 15w40 in all my tractors, from what i've heard i wouldn't switch to full synthetic you'll get leaks and your 30w should have detergent in it unless it says non-detergent on the jug

Yes there is detergent in the oil you are using. The API classification of CF/SJ means that oil is suitable for gas (letters SJ= spark ignition engines, letters CF = compression ignition (diesel) engines.I have not studied the latter API classes of oil since I quit teaching ag mechanics in 1986 and I am sure there have been many changes since that in oils. More questions? J.
