It seems like it's indeed the nuetral safety switch. Tonight I kept wiggleing the shifter and in a couple spots the starter would spin, but if I didn't hold it just right it would stop. I guess for now I'll have to bypass the switch. I know our earlier model 1755 has the updated clutch switch, I might look at it to see if I can steal that to put on the 1855.

Sounds like you have the problem isolated. These switches aren't
too bad to replace if you have an open platform tractor. All the oil
mist in the transmission tends to cause poor contact or maybe the
switch lost one of its mounting screws.
