1855 selenoid cobble job

Our 1855 isn't starting with the key anymore- and I'm pretty sure it's the solenoid. The trouble is, it's got another black plastic relay wired in which seems like another external solenoid, that is then wired to the one on the starter. It's always worked so I never messed with it but now I gotta start it with a screw driver across the terminals, either on this relay across the 2 red wires, or on the solenoid itself where the red wires are connected.

Any thoughts on this extra relay? I'm thinking I should be able to remove it, get a new solenoid for the starter, and just go back to original.

If the blue wire comes from the key switch its
probably an extra to replace the original.Guess
whoever did it had it on hand maybe?Seems like
replacing the original on the starter is all you
need.Heard of a guy got run over jumping across the
terminals and the tractor was in gear.Have to say
i've done it myself.

Don:" Before you get all carried away", make sure you have power to the relay when you turn the key. There were some problems with the original saftey switchwes on those and then they went to one on the clutch petal. do you maybe have the original set up yet? Anyway check your wiring first.

I had that thought after I slept on it a little bit. I'll try to bypass the safety switch tonight when i'm at the farm.

Don,
On my 1850 I took the solenoid apart and swapped the studs around and turned the contact disc so when the solenoid is energized it has a fresh area to make contact. Has been working a few years now, maybe somthing to try before buying a new solenoid for the starter.

The purpose of the additional relay is to provide adequate voltage to the solenoid on the starter. On some tractors the safety switches cause a volt drop because of poor contact. This relay insures 12v to the starter. It doesn't remove or bypass any of your safety switches.

This is a good idea in my opinion, and should give the main solenoid a long life.

Definitely follow JS's advice first and check the primary circuit.

If you need some help with troubleshooting, I will be glad to send some info to you.
