1850 Perkins IP Pump Question?

What type of load can the extended shaft from the rear of the injection pump drive handle? I'd like to drive a hydraulic pump or AC compressor. Thanks for any help, PK.

You need to remember that when that engine was designed it was also available to be used as a vehicle engine. That is how they drove the compressor for the air brakes. Now hydraulic pump wise how much flow and how much pressure were you thinking

Using the old rule of thumb where it takes 1 Horsepower to pump 1 gallon at 1500 PSI it would take about 25 Horsepower.

There are 2 differant engines in the 1850's. The old ones seem to have problems with those gears when they get high hours. I would not put anything on that shaft at all. The new style engine like in the 2-105 seems to be a little better. I have seen some massys with very small pumps on them. The later engine has a big high mounted waterpump with 2 termoststs.

This is a 1966 model year. Really the best set up might be to drive the pump off the front end of the crank. I've seen pictures of a hydraulic drive for a front wheel assist mounted there. Might start looking for parts. The last thing I need is to break the motor. PK

Or you could run it off the engine speed PTO and then you would be able to shut if off when you are not using it.

I've seen that engine speed PTO mentioned in the manual, just how would this work? Do you insert a shaft in the opening like with the standard PTO? This sounds interesting. PK
