Well i just got an oliver 550 loader. It runs well everything works at this time but i am just wondering on some basic maintenance items.

Im wondering what oil is used for the axle, where you check it, ive never owned a tractor before so i am not used to big transaxles? like this.

I have read from an article on here to use 10w-40 oil for the motor so unless someone tells otherwise i will do this.

Also what paint to you recommend for it? i would like to use the oliver green im wondering what code it might be and if i can possibly get it in an epoxy paint.

Well first of all it is good that you asked questions. You need to get a copy of the operators manual as it will be the book to go by. You can get a copy from the HPOCA museum in Charles City. I don't have the phone number in my head. Is this a gas or diesel tractor? The reason I asked the diesel will use different engine oil.Does it have a loader that has its own hydraulic system? I have never heard the transmission of a 2 wheel drive tractor called a transaxle. You will need a 5 gallon pail of 80-90 gear oil for it. You check it by removing a small pipe plug next to the PTO shaft. If you tractor has a 3 -point it will have a seperate reservoir. The 2 key items to me are the adjustment of the main clutch and the PTO clutch. More questions?

It is a gasoline model, it has a seperate pump for the loader.

I did some poking around today and found a dipstick under the seat on the right and also noticed that there is a fill cap of some sort right infront of the seat. The oil on the dipstick was clean and full so thats good.

I found a leak coming out of the brake? actuators it looks like they go into the transmission or something. I wouldnt think too much of it but the oil does look milky

I took pics of where its leaking from but this is the only way i can post them because my account is too new, your going to have to copy and paste these into your browser to see them

Thanks for the help

The fill cap in front of the seat is for the 80-90 oil in the transmission. Almost 5 gallons. You check it by the pipe plug just to the right of the pto. Fluid should be flush with the bottom of the plug. By your pics it does look a little milky.
The cap and dip stick behind and to the right of the seat is for the hydraulic fluid. That is also the fill hole. That fluid is separate from, and held above, the transmission fluid. It is for your 3 pt. lift.
The "brake cross shaft" has lip seals on both sides. Easy to obtain at a local parts dealer. You could replace them when you change your 80-90 oil. Drain it on the bottom (3 drain plugs!) Remove the brake pedals, clean rust and pits from the cross shaft, and pry the seal out. Make sure everything is clean and reinstall the new seal.
Lots of info available on this site, but an owners manual and a service manual are sure handy. Also check out the article lik below.
Have fun with your new tractor! And how about some pics!!

I will get some pics tomorrow when its light out, its not the prettiest it really needs a paint job.

Im going to have to get that manual asap.

Do you guys have any recommendation on gear oil brand?

Is the axle and transmission fluid the same on this? i assume that it is because the seem to be one unit.

Axle and tranny fluid is the same. I use Traveller brand because it is available at my local farm store. Any kind will do.
For the Hydraulic oil on top I use Traveller universal Trans/hydraulic fluid. I know some guys use the univeral fluid in the transmission too, but I think it is pretty thin. Personally, I was something thicker in there so it doesn't leak so easily. Good Luck

I think that i will buy the traveller 80-90 to flush out the system and try to suspend the moisture, then after a few hours switch over to amsoil 80-90.

I also found out why the oil is milky, the o-ring on the transmission fill cap is broken and if the tractor was ever left out in the rain (wont be under my watch) it would have seeped into the case.

More water will get in at the shifter boot than the missing o ring in the fill cap, but that should be replaced as well. The boot is pretty inexpensive to replace.

Because the oil was contaminated with water should i flush this transmission with kerosene? i have heard of a few people doing this.

wondering if this might do more harm than good.

It really wouldn't do much in my opionion, other than to get the dirt that is settled on the bottom of the tranmission housing. If you have a way to warm up the transmission a little bit before draining, that would help to make sure the water is suspended. Let it drip out overnight if you want and then refill it.

Yea i let it drain overnight last night and i just filled it with diesel to flush it out. Going to run it with the wheel off the ground for about a minute then let it drain and refill with 80w-90
