Do I want a Super 88, or an 880?

Had my mind set on a Super 88 (gas) for a short time now.
Was pretty much set on this until I saw an 880 at a show a month or so ago.

My grandfather had 2 770s, and I always loved the looks of them. That really got me looking at the 880s. I figure, that if I could aquire a 59 model, that I would still be in the "antique" class. Also, I see quite a few of the 77s- S88s at shows and pulls. 770s and 880s are RARE to see in this part of the country, so, it would be something a little different.

So, whats the fat and skinny on a S88 Vs an 880 (gas, Grandfather also had 2 S88s with the Diesel, and he always said he had problems with the heads. Besides, the gas engines are soooo simple to work on)

Ill mostly use this for play, casual pulls, parades, ect. 3pt and PTO are not a deal breaker.

Thoughts?

I had an 880 years ago, and sure liked it. Can't remember the HP of the 880 vs. S88, but the 880 had quite a bit more snort, if I remember correctly. I think the 880's before 1960 were the "early" type- pretty similar to S88, except the grill. The flat top fenders came later.

Mine had a 2 speed "shift on the go" feature, that was useful when doing tillage. I heard that that was kind of a weak point, though, and many didn't work (low side would go out, but high was just direct drive and bypassed the unit, so tractor would still work, in high- it was as though you didn't have it, so guys didn't go to the expense of fixing it).

they are pretty much the same. the 880 will have a little more power but since oliver was so interchangeable you could update the S88. either way if you can find it go for the 880 but the 88 is pretty much the same.

The 880 had 56 drawbar horse at 1750 rpm and the S88 had 49 at 1600 rpm.The early 880 had the spur gear transmission like the s88 then they went to helical gear trans. The spur gear gives less trouble.

The 880 was almost completely restyled with different grille, hood, dash.Engine had more horsepower and the 2-speed auxillary drive was offered among many other things.

We've had RC88's,S88's, and 880's for many years and my choice would be a nice 880.

I have both 880 and Super 88 and I will say that in some pulling circles the 880 is too NEW to be considered antique and you will have to pull farm stock or open.

just something to consider.

Would that also pertain to the 59' model? Most of the rules are pretty lax at the events we attend. No real money at stake, mostly people playing.

Those powers were the rated load at the belt pulley, not at the drawbar. Nevertheless a good indication of the differences.
