Can anyone tell me what it might take in work and/or $$s to get this working/sharpened again? Are they any good? Looks like a finish mower, yes? Its in a local auction here, and being an Oliver collector I am very tempted!

Many thanks in advance...

the machine is not a mower, it is a hay conditioner. Would have been hooked behind a sickle bar mower. As you mowed it would crimp the last swath that you cut. Not all mowers had the pto shaft on the back of them. Could also be pulled by itself to crimp hay and make it dry out sooner.

I should stick with my crawlers! Thanks guys. I have no use for a crimper, but if the price is right it might still have to come home with me ;-)

yea we had one of these when i was a kid (in the 60's) had a side mount mower (not a oliver) on our 77 and hooked the crimper to the tractor drawbar. did a good job (for the times), but, man was it noisy when it ran empty!!!!!

Did Oliver make one with one smooth steel roller, and one rubber? I used a conditioner when I worked for the neighbor, assumed it was an Oliver because the Oliver dealer is the guy who came out to fix it- but it was not like the one pictured. I spent a lot of time under it with a pocket knife, cutting off the grass that would around the steel roller. Until we learned that you can't let the grass wilt- gotta stay right after the mower, because when grass wilts, it gets sticky.

We had been doing it with one guy- mowing for ahwile, then going back and catching up with the conditioner. Had to start using two guys, one on each implement.

Mike, That conditioner in the pictures is an early model 95. That model was replaced by two new models. One was the model 37 hay crimper with the same fluted rolls, and the model 137 hay crusher with one smooth roll and one groved roll. Both models were built in the 1960's.

The one you describe is the model 137.
