Question about adding a larger engine to a 77...

I am trying to put a 880 engine in a super 77, and the shaft between the clutch and the coupler seem to be too long. What now? If you slide the shaft all the way into the clutch/pressure plate assembly, then on the other end the 2 bolts in the front end of the coupler will not line up with the groove on the shaft.
 
slide the engine ahead the reguired amount and drill new holes in the frame and or engine and bolt it in. if you still have the 77 block set it in the frame, put the motor mount bolts in, then secure a straight edge to the frame tight to the rear of the block, then set the 88 motor in against the straight edge, making sure it is centered and drill your new holes. you may have to slide the radiator forward in the shell a little. the rad can be moved foward about 13/4" with no problem. even the pto will work using this method. did that when i had a 310 in my 77. hope this helps, chuck ps, you should have the rear engine plate on when you do this.
 
This what I did take the coupler saw it in too remove the amount you need for the right length bevel the ends weld it back together grind it smooth then weld a nother band around it for strenth.I'm thinking a 1/2"been a long time ago.
 
future puller, if its a gas and you want to have pto and hydraulic then you you can do what i said above, plus i made the inlet and outlets on the radiator the same size as the engine and relocated the top outlet to clear the end of the head. the water pump shaft will have to be shortened. if you use the governer from the 77 then you can use all the stock throttle linkage. i did this conversion about 15 yrs ago, but i think my memory is pretty good. you can use an 88 flywheel, the 77 bell housing and a button clutch. the 12volt 77 starter worked fine and the 310 had 225 lbs.of compression and was stock bore and stroke. if you are just going to pull it, bolt it in, cut the drive shaft and do what needs to be done to the radiator etc. the 310 is gone but i still have the radiator if someone needs it. hope this helps, chuck
