Cockshutt 1850 timing issues (Perkins 6.354 diesel)

:? Hi, new to the forum.

I have a Cockshutt 1850 with the Perkins 354 diesel. My question for everyone is how would I go about timing it? I am completely lost as I dont have a lot of tractor experience (auto no problem)

A bolt was stripped and chipped the cam shaft gear so when I get parts I will have to figure out timing. How do I determine TDC for the engine, is there markers anywhere on these engines I should be looking for and for the biggest part how would I go about timing the cam shaft once I throw the near gear on it.

I hope I dont come off as a moron or anything, this is a big learning experience for me.

Not worry about the moron thing, you get used to it. I feel like that with every post I make.
Take care
Todd
ps: lotsa excellent help here

Moron here! May I suggest if you don't have them purchase a set of manuals for your 1850. They'll be a big help to you and your super tractor.

If you want to position the crankshaft at TDC there is an inspection cover on the right hand side of the flywheel housing. Rotate the engine and align the timing mark on the flywheel with the pointer under the inspection cover.

Also remember once you line the timing gears up, DON"T turn the engine till you get that part assembled as those timing marks line up once every 54 turns if I remember the right number. You will also need to time the pump drive shaft which is NOT marked. More questions? J.
