hooking up amp meter to 880

i just had my generator rebuilt, and new voltage regulator put on. i cut hole in dash to install an ampmeter, but getting conflicting ways to hook it up. some say just install it between the wire going to the battery, others say run it through the key switch. which way is better.

thanks

Depends what you want it to show. If charging is all you want to see, hook it in the charge wire from the generator. If you want to see charging and discharging it needs to go in the wire from the battery to everything but the starter and manifold heater. They are easy to hook up, just watch it when you start up the engine to see that the polarity is correct. If not just switch the wires to the other sides. Have a good week with your Oliver.

Here's a link to a basic charging circuit diagram for Generator with 4 terminal regulator, generator with 3 terminal regulator, or alternator.

Generator/Alternator output goes to one side of Ammeter, other side of Ammeter goes to charge battery. Loads and switches go to the Generator/Alternator side of the Ammeter.

Generator/Alternator side of the Ammeter FEEDS the switches. There is no switch connecting Generator/Alternator output to Ammeter. With engine not running the output is isolated by the generator regulator or internal circuit of alternator.

Andy, I put an ampmeter on our 770 Oliver when it was new in about 1960. I just cut the hot wire comming from the battery/starter solinoid and connected each end to the ampmeter terminals. It been working good for 30 years and shows both charge and discharge. If the meter works backwards, then just switch the wires at the amp meter. Al
