Just about had it with our 1800C

I finally found a radiator and got it put on our 1800C yesterday. Today I decided to hit the starter to make sure everything was loose before I completely put the cooling system back together.

You guessed it: NO GO. The starter is very strong and it did nothing, just hit the ring gear but no turning. Even after we tried to pull it to loosen it, nothing.

It is now in the shop. It looks like I'll have to pull the head to see what is going on. I am afraid that the overheating when the radiator let go did something inside.

Oh the joys of life on the farm!!!

Was the engine free when you parked the tractor? Did you put a socket and break-over bar on the front pulley? You said the starter just stopped. Did you check for bad connections? How did you try to pull it? What range did you have the hydrapower in? Make SURE you try to turn it over with the break-over bar first.

The tractor was running when we parked it this summer.

I just tried to turn it over using a break-over bar, it would not budge even with a 6' long cheater. I even loosened the injectors.

The starter is strong, it just doesn't turn over the tractor.

What should I do now?

Well, if it won't budge with a 6' cheater, looks like a tear down and rebuild is in order.

It was an over-abundance of this kind of stuff that finally led me to the the same realization as the tomcat makin' love to the skunk- "I think I've enjoyed about as much of this as I can stand"- and I got out. That was 25 years ago. Still tinker around with stuff related to wife's horses, but no balers or combines anymore, thank you very much.

The first thing to check is if starter is caught on the fly wheel ring gear loosen up the3 bolts that hold the starter a half an inch and wiggle it around and retighten up the bolts and try it.

I removed the starter and it spins like a top when not engaged with the ring gear.

Take the cap nut off of each energy cell (1-1/8 socket. Take a needle nose Vice grip and pull the little caps out and don't mix them up. See if any liquid comes out of any cylinders and then see if it turns over with all of them out. More later tonight.

Well, I did a little more digging.

I asked my son about the tractor, if anything had happened when I had been gone. He said: "one day the can blew off the muffler, I put it back after the storm".

Bad news! I removed the exhaust manifold and cylinders 2, 3, and 4 had water and rust present. Unfortunately it looks like cylinder 3 had the exhaust valve open. I bet there is water in the cylinder.

I guess I will have to get that fuel tank lifted so I can get the head off.

Well I drained the oil.....there was quite a bit of water, looked like a couple of quarts.

What do I need to do to limit any more damage?

Mike, as always I sure enjoy your good sense of humour. Sort of describes a love-hate relationship well.
How is that 35 Cockshutt working for you?

Regards from Ontario

Neil

Thanks for the kind words, Neil. The Cockshutt project, like about a half dozen others, seems to be languishing these days. Got it apart, was going to set up an electrolysis tub to de-rust, and "there it sits". Have gotten too busy with my job (and mama's horses), and not as much energy anymore- hard to make myself go out to the shop in the evenings!

One of these days. . .
